Hollyhocks in Haggerston, the Grand Union – and swimming dogs

07/05/2021 //  by Michelle//  Leave a Comment

I do love hollyhocks and  have just designated the perfect spot in my new garden at Hampstead Lane – if I can persuade them to grow. (A post on the garden coming very soon.) These were in Haggerston Park, where I found myself yesterday afternoon after a slightly unlikley Sunday afternoon walking tour around Hackney council estates organised by OpenCity. (It was, in fact, very interesting.) Anyhow, we ended up at the Erno Goldfinger designed Haggerston School, just round the corner from the rather lovely Haggerston Park.

A quick browse of Google maps showed me that the ubiquitous Grand Union canal ran very close (is there anywhere that the Grand Union does not run close to?) and that I could walk along it back to Angel station – and so I did.

Here it is, very colourful, close to Haggerston.

Waiting for the lock to fill….

Sitting out enjoying the sun.

And finally disappearing into the underground tunnel at Angel.

Back on the heath a couple of days ago, there was much activity at the dog swimming area just opposite the mixed bath pond. So nice to swim with a friend – even if other dogs make rather too much noise.

But then swimming is SO exciting that how can one not shout about it?
