Another casualty…..

09/02/2020 //  by Michelle//  2 Comments

Do you remember this fine L-shaped tree? I noticed it some months ago and was so impressed by the perfect symmetry of its fall.

Well, sadly, I fear that the upright of the L has fallen victim to the gales of the last ten days. I am not sure when it happened but the leaves still look very much alive so I think it must have been very recently.

But in its falling, it has created some wonderful bark filigree…

…and conjured up the spirits of the tree. Is that  rocket taking off from the depths of its trunk and heading for the stars?

A pensive god of the woodland, surveying the heath and that havoc that the winds have wrought in his kingdom?

And finally, can you see this guy? A lizard like creature, his head bent over, long nose sniffing out what the winds might have unearthed?

I went back this afternoon to see if I could get a clearer picture of him, but… he was gone. Did I imagine him? Had he dived back into the depths of the tree trunk? Or, which I fear might have been more prosaically the case, had someone climbed on him and crushed him?  I noticed that our god of the woodland was now leaning back at a slightly drunken angle so I fear the worst…..

I notice all these tree roots seem to have a fungus … honey fungus or some such?

I hope this finds you well, and thanks for the great pics!

Yes, I think that the trees who succumb to the winds are all ones that are in some way diseased. My understanding of a healthy trunk is that it should have loads of rings. Thank you – very well – as I hope are you. M
