For the last ten days tents have been popping up all over the Kenwood Lawns, blue pipes snaking their way along every path and teams of high viz jacketed workers swarming all over the park – in preparation for last weekened’s Heritage Live concert – 10,000 expected…..
Rag N Bone Man, Boy George and the Culture Club, David Rodigan & The Outlook Orchestra – this was serious stuff… But, it never happened.
I heard from my son who was signed up to go on Sunday evening but only discovered what had happened this afternoon when I walked up to Kenwood and chatted to a couple of the high viz-ers. It seems that all the rain we have had recently has made the heath’s clay/sand mix unstable and when they erected the stage, it started gradually slithering to one side and one side started sinking. The following morning, it had righted itself but then started slithering the other way. Now whether that was actually what happened I am not sure, but obviously something along those lines as the email my son got mentioned ‘the stage’ and the handout I was given by my informants said that ‘inclement weather over the past weeks had caused significant issues which their Health and Safety Advisors had deemed unsafe for the artists, crew and audience’.
Ticket holders have been told to hold on to their tickets in the hope that the concerts can be rescheduled – check in to Heritage Live for news. Meanwhile the tents are coming down and the blue pipes being re-rolled up. A very disappointing – and horribly expensive – outcome for everyone…
