Was in the walled pear garden at Cannon Hall farm…2 weeks ago…and there must have been 50 Red admiral butterflies …a hatching…on one of the espalier grown pear trees..
A wonderful sight…but they should be tucked up in chrysalis until the spring….

The pear garden has a collection of old varieties of pears..trees, cordons, espalier…and the harvest day..late Sept is well worth visiting…some of the old varieties…far more tasty than the modern ones…

I just love walled gardens… Especially walled vegetable or fruit gardens – and even more so when they have been inch-perfect trained against old brick walls… Very late for butterflies? We did have some this summer, but not many – and mainly cabbage whites.
