Fancy some kefir grains?

02/21/2023 //  by Michelle//  3 Comments

Spring is definitely on its way as my kefir grains have suddenly started to grow and multiply. Having semi hybernated for the winter, as the first daffs appear so do the kefir grains start to grow. As a result I have more than I need and would be very happy to pass some on.

For those who have not met kefir, it is, basically, yogurt on steroids. Google ‘kefir’ and you will find a wealth of information on how it could change your life. I would not go that far but I am sure it brings a wealth of good bacteria my way, and thereby gives me energy to haul branches (as we were doing this morning in Highgate Woods) and generally keep Hampstead Heath in order.

Making – or actually ‘feeding’ – kefir is very simple. If you log into our Foods Matter site here Sue Cane (who originally gave me my grains – descendants of grains she had inherited from her father) has recorded a short video on what to do. And if you go here, another old friend, Gill Jacobs, has given you more instructions.

If you would like some grains, email me with your name and postal address and I will post you some. They will be quite happy in a small pot with a bit of milk, even through the vagaries of our postal system.

By the way, I feed my kefir with unpasteurised Guernsey milk – gourmet food for kefir. I get mine via Farm Direct. But it will be quite happy on a diet of ordinary milk although it would prefer it to be organic.
