For whatever reasons I have not been paying that much attention recently to the intricate bark patterns that so many of the trees on the heath create, so here are just a couple of the ones I passed yesterday on my way back from our walk on Sandy Heath – below.
And some rather fine lichen…
And since we have not been for a walk anywhere for a while โ a walk across Sandy Heath โ in two parts as it was interrupted by a phone call. Apologies!

I just like and, (to turn a popularist phrase used so often these days…) ‘resonate’ with the things you focus on. I just know I’d really get on with you. Well, let’s just say.. I do!

Yes, the ‘alarming’ traffic between Ham & Hi…, that’s one thing I surely do NOT miss about being in the thick of London. I’d love to do a video for you one of these days, just out on my daily walks as you do. It was very nice to hear your voice though in this recent video that you’ve done. Yes, it was one of those rather overcast days BUT you always seem to manage to find the magic, those reflections in the pools, the mini-mud-hippopotamus et al. Those who can find the magic in every moment are the people I want to be around now. ‘Good’ bless you.
Michelle
Thank you Christopher.
Emma
What beautiful reflections from those tree branches, Michelle. Even when the water is murky and shallow there are reflections cast. The bird noises are a wonderful reminder of the nature hiding in the bushes. I would hazard a guess at robin, blackbird and some of the tit family. I certainly heard your London parakeets. I’m delighted to hear your wellies are still bringing you joy. I think I might buy myself a pair and test them in our Devon quagmires!
Emma
Oh and that quirky tree branch looks very much like it had grown around another trunk which has subsequently been taken away.
Michelle
So hard to tell which other bird are singing a lot of the time Emma, through that barrier of parakeet adn crow! They are especially noisy in Kenwood Wood and, thank goodness, do see to stay mainly around there. I think there is some talk of them trying to cull the parakeets which, pretty as they may be, would actually be quite welcome. Thoroughly recommend the wellies – especially with two thick pairs of Brigdale socks!
Michelle
Ah, good thinking. I wondered how on earth it got to that shape.
Emma Hutchinson
Having seen how competitive the parakeets are i can understand, although a cull seems harsh. How on earth do we decide on one species over another, perhaps its not our decision to make?
Any how, on a lighter note, I’m off to peruse wellies online ๐
Michelle
Well, its the grey squirrel/red squirrel argument, isn’t it โ the native versus the immigrants – but that leads us into deep water!
Let me recommend Grubs boots – the ones with tractor soles if you are looking for minimum skiddability.
